Having already been a champion of gender-balanced programming since 2016, Way Out West signed up to the Keychange pledge in 2018 with over 150 other festivals. A pioneer across multiple fields, the festival prides itself on its sustainable outlook and has also been completely meat-free since 2012, leading the way in its long term commitment to environmental issues and equality.

The festival is vegetarian and has been completely meat free and largely dairy free since 2012 and has been certified in accordance with ISO 20121 since 2013, a testament to the festival’s sustainability efforts, which have seen it reduce its carbon footprint year-by-year. A city festival, the proximity between the festival area and suppliers reduces transport, and the lack of camping reduces emissions. Since 2018, Way Out West has invested in emission-reducing measures outside of its own operations, in order to be able to become climate neutral.

Much more than just a music festival, Way Out West also features an impressive programme of engaging discussions from some of the world’s leading thinkers, alongside film premieres in cinemas across Gothenburg and Slottsskogen. Past speakers include Chelsea Manning whilst past premieres include the Oscar and BAFTA-winning films Searching for Sugarman and Boyhood and Palme d’Or-winning The Square.
