A symbol of feminism and the intellectuality of New York punk rock, the iconic PATTI SMITH tops the new names that are added to the rock and roll festival poster par excellence, the Azkena Rock Festival, which will celebrate its 19th edition on the 19th and 20th of June 2020 in Mendizabala, Vitoria-Gasteiz.
American singer, songwriter and author PATTI SMITH is considered one of the greatest influences of New York punk rock. Poet of origin, fused rock and poetry with a style that marked an entire generation and impregnated the punk music of feminism and intellectuality. Her most popular song, ‘Because the Night’, written alongside Bruce Springsteen, is one of the hymns of the 20th century. United in an intrinsic way to its musical dimension also its facets as a political and environmental activist and poet, since ‘Horses’, her debut in 1975 in the full irruption of punk, has not ceased to take her honest and alien attitude to the whole world.

Also joining the new announcement are Californian group L7, legendary group of grunge and punk rock, which after announcing their first album in 20 years, Scatter The Rats’, a new album in which they maintain their essence and includes a more powerpop wave to their compositions choose Azkena as the only date in the State. L7 return to Vitoria accompanied by their vitalistic attitude, their melodic lines and their own guitar riffs of sludge and punk.
With more than 28 years of career and eleven albums published, the legendary Texan formation REVEREND HORTON HEAT took their first steps with SubPop, one of the most important labels in the history of music and since then it has emerged as one of the most popular bands important of psychobilly. His frontman, James Heath, known as “the reverend”, is considered one of the best guitarists in the world in his genre.
With an exclusive date in 2020, THE STEEPWATER BAND returns to the festival after its visit in 2005 to the joy of the sugar audience. The blues rock band founded in Chicago in the 90s will once again delight us with its songs formed with bases on horseback between blues, southern rock, boogie and active psychedelia.
Local rock will be represented by the Vitorian hard rock-metal band THE FAITHLESS. Founded in 2016, with two albums and great mileage throughout the peninsula, the band travels the foundations of a modern rock and metal in their first work, ‘To the End’, and explores more aggressive sounds and metalheads on his second album: ‘Fighting the Shadows’.
