LOCAL NATIVES were born from the encounter between guitarist Ryan Hahn, singer-guitarist Taylor Rice and keyboardist Keley Ayer while still attending Orange County High School, and at a time when they were already playing together in various punk bands. Only later, in 2008, was the lineup complete with drummer Matt Frazier and bassist Andy Hamm, essential contributions to the consolidation of the band’s musical language. “Gorilla Manor”, the debut album, came shortly after, in 2009, with the label of British publisher Infectious Records. In 2013, following the departure of Andy Hamm and the entry of bassist Nick Ewing, LOCAL NATIVES released their second album. “Hummingbird” is a darker and more atmospheric record than the debut album.
The band’s popularity was steadily increasing, as was the critics’ recognition, completely surrendered to the post-punk urgency that marks some of the best songs in this American quintet. At first it was impossible not to make comparisons with some of the strongest names in indie music of this century, such as Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear or Yeasayer, but over time LOCAL NATIVES have found a place of their own, marked by unmistakable harmonies, influence. the music of the African continent and the Middle East, the dream pop atmosphere and a host of other elements that together make Local Natives one of the best bands of the moment.
In 2016 they released their third album, “Sunlit Youth”. The use of synthesizers gave this album optimism, something that is very evident in themes like “Coins”. Three years after the “Sunlit Youth” edition, this year 2019 brings a new album from Local Natives. “Violet Street” features Shawn Everett’s seasoned production (Weezer, The War on Drugs, Kacey Musgraves) and has singles as strong as “When Am I Gonna Lose You” or “Café Amarillo” – to sing out loud next time.
