Foals first band confirmed for Super Bock Super Rock 2020

FOALS are one of the most creative and exciting bands of the last 15 years in the alternative rock scene. It all started in Oxford when longtime friends Yannis Philippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevan (drums) decided to form another group after the end of another joint project, the late The Edmund Fitzgerald. Andrew Mears (vocals), Jimmy Smith (guitar) and Walter Gervers (bass) joined the two friends and Foals was born, which comes from the Philippakis’ nickkname’s etymology.

After having released their first single, “Try This on Your Piano”, Andrew left the band and Edwin Congreave took over the keyboards and Philippakis takes over the vocals. Now, with a definite formation, (later, the bass player Walter would also leave), the next step would be to sign with Transgressive Records and release “Hummer” and “Mathletics”, singles that greatly raised the buzz around them.

In 2008, their debut album, “Antidotes” confirmed all of the best expectations. Recorded in New York and produced by Dave Sitek, guitarist for TV on The Radio, the album shows a band committed to their own freedom. Their following records, “Total Live Forever” (2010), “Holy Fire” (2013) and “What Went Down” (2015) raised the bar artistically and consolidated the group’s own language amongst their many references. Krautrock, indie rock, dance-punk, math rock, post-punk and even techno, everything contributes to a difficult sound to categorise, sometimes freer and more experimental and sometimes capable of captivating a wide audience.

2019 is the year they return to the albums with what is the most ambitious one of all of the band’s albums. “Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1” was nominated for a Mercury Prize and already won the best album of the year award for Q Magazine. “Exits” or “In Degrees” are two of the songs that promise to conquer the audience in the summer of 2020, in yet another Super Bock Super Rock.
